Reviews:

"A bone-dry riesling with amazing purity and power. Lemon blossom and lime laced with a fine saline-mineral character. Laser-fine acidity emphasises the wine's purity and drives a lingering finish. An extraordinary wine with great cellaring potential."

Kusuda Wines:

Tokyo-born Hiroyuki (known as Hiro) Kusuda trained as a lawyer and worked for Fujitsu, then the Consulate General of Japan in Sydney before throwing it all in to pursue his other love, wine and winemaking. Developing his style during harvests in Burgundy and studying viticulture at Geisenheim in Germany, the choice of New Zealand in general and Martinborough in particular apparently came about through tasting the 1992 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir. Hiro Kusuda is meticulous to an almost fanatical degree, but it explains the exceptional quality and amazing precision of his wines. They speak of passion, diligence, and the continuous pursuit of perfection. Volumes produced are very small, with only 1.6 ha of Pinot Noir, 1.2 ha of Syrah and even less of Riesling grown. With international demand far exceeding supply we are very happy to be able to offer an allocation each year!

Jancis Robinson MW: “I recently had a chance to taste the current releases from one of my favourite producers on the planet, the Japanese Kusuda family in Martinborough, New Zealand. Thanks to presumably hard work on the part of the importer, a small allocation of four wines has found its way to the UK and I would urge anyone seriously interested in
fine, inspirational Pinot Noir, or even fine burgundy, to try to get their hands on a bottle of Kusuda Pinot Noir… The Syrah is markedly different - as of course it should be - but I would guess much more inspiration came from the northern Rhône than from the growing band of New Zealand producers of Syrah…”
